How to Practice Self-Care and Improve your Mood

Tips for Practising Self-Care

Self-care is simply about taking good care of YOU. Doing things to improve your mood, make you feel amazing and brighten your day. It could be as simple as running yourself a bath, going for a walk or buying yourself a treat. But self-care is a responsibility, you need to do it to appreciate yourself, love yourself and be happy in your own skin.

The more time you dedicate to taking care of yourself, the stronger the relationship you have with yourself will become. You’ll also find every other relationship you have in your life will benefit too, because you can’t pour from an empty cup. You must take care of yourself first.

Self-care forces you to slow down, take time for yourself and do things just because they make you happy. It doesn’t make you selfish or self-indulgent, it makes you human. Self-care is an act of survival. It’s strangely attractive in modern society to be SO busy all the time. Without that we aren’t seen as ‘grinding’ or working hard enough. But the truth is to succeed, you need to take care of your number one above all.

It can be hard to get the hang of at first, and a difficult process to come to terms with. But here I have shared with you 10 ideas you can do to practice self-care and improve your mood!

“You must nourish to flourish”

10 Ways to Practice Self-Care:

1.       Exercise

Exercise can make you feel so much better. Your body releases endorphins, known as happy hormones, which boost your mood and make you feel uplifted. Take some time to yourself to go to the gym, take a walk, do some yoga, or just some simple stretching. It doesn’t have to be a sweaty weights session, do what makes you feel good and works for YOU. You can read my recent post all about the benefits of exercise here or my top tips for building confidence in the gym here.

2.       Read

Reading is so peaceful, it’s just you and a book. No technology, internet or distractions from social media, just words on a page. I find reading motivation, self-help and spiritual books so uplifting. I have read the Mel Wells: The Goddess Revolution book more times than I can count on my hand, and I get the same enjoyment from it every time. Allow yourself an hour before bed to unplug from technology and just sit and read a book, and I guarantee you’ll feel better and get a much better night’s sleep.

3.       Eat Well

Ever heard the saying “You are what you eat?” Well its true, the food we put in our bodies gives us our energy and fuel. If you aren’t fuelling your body correctly, you won’t be performing at your best both mentally and physically. Aim to eat wholesome hearty nutritious foods majority of the time over processed, greasy, fatty foods filled with chemicals, preservatives and additives and I promise you will feel so much better.

4.       Journal

At the end of each day, write down things that went well that day, things that made you smile, laugh or something you’ve accomplished. You can also write down one thing to improve tomorrow, but don’t be too hard on yourself, just set yourself a simple goal. This gives you time to yourself to focus on your goals and accomplishments and will also help you to be more productive.

5.       Rest

Sleep is so important. Without the right amount of sleep, you’ll feel tired, sluggish, unproductive and probably quite miserable for the whole day. When we are asleep our bodies produce so many important hormones as well as restore brain cells. Therefore, it is so important that we are getting to bed early and allowing enough sleep for our bodies to rest, recover and repair.

6.       Hydrate

Water is essential for us to survive. Drinking enough fluids is crucial for our bodies and dehydration can seriously affect your mood, performance and concentration. Aim to drink 2-3 litres of water a day and you will be able to function and live at your best potential.

7.       Beautify

Sometimes us girls need some pamper time. It makes us feel special, beautiful and just all round better about ourselves. You could run yourself a bath, put on a facemask, do your nails or simply wash and blow dry your hair!

8.       Recharge

Down time is so important. We can’t be working or studying every second of the day, we need time to recharge and time for ourselves. It could just be time watching tv, meeting friends or listening to music. Whatever makes you happy and you feel recharges your body, spend an hour doing that every day. 9.       Reward

Treat yourself girl! If you do something amazing, achieve one of your goals or simply just feel like it… Reward yourself! Some girls enjoy buying themselves flowers, going shopping for a new outfit or even rewarding themselves with a meal out to your favourite restaurant. Be kind to yourself, you deserve it and it will make you feel so much better.

10.   Practice Gratitude

Gratitude is a powerful process for shifting your energy and bringing more of what you want into your life. Spend time being grateful for what you already have and you’ll find you will attract more good things.

“Gratitude is the best attitude”

Even if you implement 3 of these ideas in to your daily routine, I guarantee you’ll feel better both mentally and physically. Self-Care is so important and comes in so many ways unique to you. Something that works for one person isn’t necessarily what will work for you. So, think of what makes you happy, what makes you feel good and practice that every day. For me, it’s keeping active, eating well, watching Netflix at night with my boyfriend and writing these blogs!
